3 Why Care About Physics? – 1) It's fun and interesting to understand how the universe works (Physics explains how things work. It tells you the "why" things do what they do.) – 2) Once you understand how the universe works, you might be able to use that knowledge to your advantage. – 3) Physics is a part of everything that happens on the planet and to you!

4 Famous Physicists Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) Italian who did experiments and mathematical analyses in astronomy and physics; discovered mountains and craters on the moon, the phases of Venus, and the four largest satellites of Jupiter Galileo Galilei Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727)Englishman who developed theories of gravitation and mechanics, and invented differential calculus Sir Isaac Newton Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)American the first American physicist; characterized two kinds of electric charge Benjamin Franklin Albert Einstein (1879-1955)German-born American; contributed to theory of atomic spectra; formulated theories of special and general relativity Albert Einstein

7 Motion What is motion? In physics, motion is a change in position of an object with respect to time.

8 Displacement Distance from start to finish

9 Speed Speed = the distance traveled divided by the time » s = d/t * Don’t forget to label units – Ex. Miles/minute or Km/hr.

10 Types of Speed AverageInstantaneous Overall Rate of Speed Speed of an object at one instant of time Both are still calculated as (s = d / t)

11 Calculating Speed Ex. A snail moved 1 meter in 10 minutes. What is the snail’s average speed? Ex. A boat travels 100 miles. If it was traveling at an average speed of 25 mi/hr, how long did it take the boat to reach its destination?

12 Velocity Velocity = Speed + Direction of Motion – Ex. 40 km/h north

13 Calculating Velocity Ex. A car moved 20 km East and 60 km West in 2 hours. What is its average velocity? Velocity = Displacement + Direction time

14 Graphing Motion A Distance-time Graph is used to compare speeds of objects X-axis = time Y-axis = distance
