1 How do resources and abiotic factors affect the organisms in an ecosystem? Sixth Grade Ecology (Life Sciences) 5.e Organisms in ecosystems exchange energy and nutrients among themselves and with the environment. As a basis for understanding this concept: Students know the number and types of organisms an ecosystem can support depends on the resources available and on abiotic factors, such as quantities of light and water, a range of temperatures, and soil composition. 3 Summary/ Abstract of Unit Students will understand how their choices and actions impact the environment and how they impact the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. BAESI July 26-28 2011: SUSTAINABILITY

6 Unit Assessment SWBAT create a reasonable food chain based on observations of an outdoor environment. SWBAT determine what the major interdependencies are within their ecosystem. SWBAT calculate an ecological footprint and make adjustments for changes in behavior. SWBAT observe and analyze the waste stream produced within their own school environment SWBAT identify options for possible community projects, create a realistic plan for implementation, implement a new community project, and self-assess for the quality and effectiveness of the implemented plan within the community.
