1 Layers of the Earth – the Foldable
Or, How to Color your Earth Layers Foldable (if needed) AND do your science homework assigned Wed., 09/16/15

2 What we did in class 09/15/15: After the quiz, students colored the foldable layers as dictated by Mrs. Best If you did not finish, were not here to do the coloring, or just want to check yours, look at the next few slides If you have finished coloring, skip to slide #9 for instructions

3 Coloring –If you need to do/finish/check your coloring
If you are just checking what you did or need to finish, the next slide shows the list of which color goes with each layer. You can use this and then skip to slide #10 for further instructions. If you need to do all the coloring, look at all the slides and you can see how to color each section a few at a time.

4 Coloring – all at once list
Use this list if you want to figure out on your own the layers shown on the foldable page From bottom to top, color the layers as: Inner Core – red Upper Mantle - yellow Outer Core – red-orange Oceanic Crust – dark brown Lower Mantle – orange Continental Crust – lt. brown Middle Mantle – lt. orange Ocean – blue Skip this page and go on to the next if you want to see one- by-one how to color

5 Inner & Outer Core Colors
Color the Outer Core “orange-red” as shown: Color the Inner Core “red” as shown:

6 Mantle Colors Color the Upper Mantle “yellow” as shown:
Color the Middle Mantle “light orange” as shown: Color the Lower Mantle “orange” as shown:

7 Crust & Ocean Colors Color the Ocean “blue” as shown:
Color the Continental Crust “light brown” as shown: Color the Oceanic Crust “dark brown” as shown:

8 After the coloring … now what?
Cut apart the 4 main layers on the foldable worksheet You will end up with 4 layers – inner core (smallest) – outer core – mantle – crust

9 Starting to Assemble Your Foldable
Put one layer picture on each flap so that your foldable looks somewhat like this (make sure the staples on the foldable flap are at the bottom!) :

10 Now you add labels and title
Save the 4 layer boxes for now—we’ll add information in them in class either on Wed. or Thur. Either cut out the labels on the lower right side of the worksheet and the title at the top or… Write the label & title words yourself using an ultrafine sharpie where they should go on the foldable Check yours with the one shown on slide #9 or ask Mrs. Best if you aren’t sure where something goes

11 After the labeling… now what?
Everyone needs to look at the next slides so you can do your science homework tonight. You will be adding information to the small boxes (layer information boxes) found at the lower right of your foldable sheet.

12 What to Do to Complete your 09/16/15 Science Homework
2) Watch a video—the hyperlink is on the next slide! (If you have trouble loading, try Helpful Websites on Mrs. Best’s Blackboard) As you watch the video, fill in the blanks for the 4 boxes The whole foldable will not be due until Mon., 09/21/15… but, we will be adding to it— tomorrow!

13 Adding Information to Layer Boxes
Watch the following video & write in in each box as video plays to fill in for: Composition (makeup of material) Thickness (do in km, not miles) State of Matter (solid, liquid, gas) s#t=52 If you cannot get video to load from here or Blackboard, you can look at the last slide for help

14 Adding Information from Video, cont.
The video mentions what the crust is made of but does not show you how to spell the term, so here it is… the crust is made of alumino- silicates (bet you guessed that these have lots of Al and Si!) You can also say that the continental crust is made of granitic (less dense rocks like granite) and oceanic crust of basaltic (denser rocks like basalt) rocks

15 What to Do If Video Does Not Load (or you can’t load if from Blackboard):
Click on the picture to the right. Make the picture larger by dragging a corner. Get the info you need from the text of the picture. OR, click on the hyperlink to the right to take you to the site itself.

16 That’s it! At least, for now…
I know that you haven’t written anything inside each fold to produce the awesome foldable it will be yet… Further instructions will follow! Don’t forget—the finished foldable is due on Mon., 09/21/15!
