Online Problem Solving Using COPS Amin Jazaeri, PhD. COS Math & Science Accelerator/School of Physics, Astronomy and Computational Sciences Spring 2013

What is COPS? COPS stands for: Collaborative Online Problem Solving It is a tool to assist the instructor to track and view the dynamics of online collaborative group problem solving. It is also an aide to students to monitor individual group members activity.

Background on developing this tool Teaching undergraduate calculus based physics in LOGIC format. LO-GIC stands for: Lectures Online Group-work In Class. It is a “Hybrid” course that concentrates on problem solving as an in class activity. Lectures are provided as video segments and students are required to watch the videos before coming to class. The lecture time is primarily used for problem solving.

LOGIC Model (GIC Part) Problems are presented to students from the book. Students work in groups of 4-5. The instructor walks around the classrooms answering questions. Only hints will be provided. Students spend an average of 15-20 minutes on each problem. Instructor will go over the problem and answer any additional questions regarding the problem.

LOGO Model LOGO stands for: Lectures Online, Group-work Online Was Modeled after the LOGIC. The lectures are provided as videos. The group work is done online synchronously. To assist students collaborating with each other for problem solving, Collaborative Online Problem Solving (COPS) was developed.

When LOGO meets LOGIC Developed for large courses to accommodate students attend the course either online or face-to- face. Online students work together online and inclass students collaborate face-to-face. A common interface for both courses was needed to allow both type of students access the material presented in the course. The success of this course is heavily dependent on my LAs.

How the LAs are involved Assisting with equipment setup. Answering questions. Grouping students for breakout rooms & Monitoring student activities in the breakout rooms. Helping students with problem solving both online and face-to-face. Assisting with presentation of the material.
