Bottled Water. Robby and John Michael

Bottled aqua, H2O, WATER! Bottled water comes from many places: natural springs, aquifers, rivers, streams, lakes, and also from public sources such as the tap. Bottled water is fresh water, so it doesn't come from the ocean.

Why H20 doh? Bottled Water is a huge money making product considering that tap water 560 times less expensive than bottled water. It’s a huge part of the U.S and the world’s economy. We chose this topic to show how bottled water came to be and how it affects the world today.

Brief Hitsory. Bottling water began in the United Kingdom with the first water bottling at the Holy Well in 1622.The demand for bottled water was fueled in large part by the resurgence in spa-going and water therapy among Europeans and American colonists in the 17th and 18th centuries. The first commercially distributed water in America was bottled and sold by Jackson’s Spa in Boston in 1767. Early drinkers of bottled spa waters believed that the water at these mineral springs had therapeutic properties and that bathing in or drinking the water could help treat many common ailments.

Future? In a single year 2.7 million tons of plastic are produced for the bottling of water. Polyethylene Terephthalate, the main type of plastic used to make these bottles, is produced from Crude Oil. To meet the yearly bottled water demand in the United States alone it requires 1.5 million barrels of oil. According to the Earth Policy Institute, that much oil could power around 100,000 cars for an entire year. Even with this information, the bottled water need continues to grow. Soon the bottle water industry will overtake carbonated soft drinks as the largest beverage category in the United States.

By the Gallon Americans last year bought and consumed roughly 50 billion plastic bottles of water. (That would be 140,000,000 bottles sold a day!) Americans increasingly are turning to bottled water, making it a $4 billion-a-year business in the United States. Millions of us are willing to pay 240 to over 10,000 times more per gallon for bottled water than we do for tap water though people rarely think of it that way.
