GW MEN’S SOCCER- CONSUMPTION OF PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES

THROUGHOUT THE SEASON  Every Monday, 1 crate of water = 24 plastic bottles  10 weeks = 240 plastic bottles total  After 10 th week, we all got reusable sports water bottles  No more plastic water bottles

WATER BOTTLE CONSUMPTION - USA  29 billion bottles used per year  Manufacturers use 17 million barrels of crude oil  Enough crude oil for 1 million cars for 12 months  Only 1 of 6 bottles are recycled  End up in trashes in land, rives, lakes, and oceans  1 plastic bottle = 60 watt light bulb for 6 hours

IMPACTS FROM US CONSUMPTION 1. Energy required to produce plastic bottles = 17 million barrels of crude oil 2. 3L of water to produce a 1L plastic bottle 3. Less than 20% gets recycled 4. A 20.3 g plastic bottle generates 96g of greenhouse gases

IMPACTS FROM GW MEN’S SOCCER CONSUMPTION 1. Energy required to produce 240 plastic bottles =.14064 barrels of crude oil 2. 1440L of water required to produce 240 500mL plastic bottles 3. Less than 40 out of 240 plastic bottles will be recycled 4. 240 plastic bottles = 96 lbs. of carbon dioxide(only from the producing on the bottle; does not include transportation)

IMPACT FROM TRANSPORTATION 1. DEER PARK, MD TO FOXHALL ROAD, DC  284 miles  8.3 gallons of gasoline (approx. standard Honda Accord)  163 lbs. of carbon dioxide

GOVERNMENT POLICIES  Concord, Mass. banned single serving plastic water bottles -First and Second time offenders: $25 fine -Repeated offenders: $50 fine  Fees for disposal of plastic products  Incentives to recycle used plastic bottles  More emphasis on the issue

REPLACE PLASTIC BOTTLES  Two major breakthroughs: 1. SodaStream- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE9U4mMqKP4 2. Brita filter
