EXCERPT FROM TEXTREASON WHY  It is dawn in Africa. A quiet hum encompasses a small village in Southern Sudan where most are still asleep, collecting the last few hours of rest before a new day begins. Among those asleep are Dut, a young boy of five years old, his parents, two brothers and his sister. A deafening boom followed by many more suddenly disrupts the peace, awakening the entire village. Confusion and fear fill Dut’s groggy thoughts as he makes his way off his sleeping mat and outside to see what is happening. The scene before his eyes will undoubtedly be imprinted upon his mind, forever.  I feel like I did a good job at showing what type of genre this excerpt came from by doing one main thing, catching the readers attention by setting the scene and, at the same time introducing who I was reporting on.

I feel like I did a good job at showing how Dut has integrated himself into American life through the picture I chose. I also like how I was able to use an actual picture of the person I was doing my profile on. Even though Dut has been through much, he still smiles for the camera.

 One mistake made in an attempt to aid these nations is doing too many things for them and in return, more harm than good is done. We send people over in the thousands to build schools and orphanages, to perform surgeries and health checks, to dig wells and plow and plant farms. How will they ever learn these important skills if all we do is complete it for them? Sending groups over to teach how a well is dug, teach how a field is plowed, and teach how foundation is laid for a building will boost economical growth, and intern provide more jobs thus tapping into capital markets around the world. There is an ancient Chinese proverb that says, “Give a man a fish and he will be fed for a day, but teach that man how to fish and he will be fed for a lifetime.” Teach instead of do.  I really liked how I integrated the Chinese proverb into this part of my proposition paper. I thought this consistently corresponded with the current issue at hand; teaching instead of doing things for the people of Africa.

EXCERPT FROM TEXTMY RESPONSE  Dut Aguare is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan who, at age five, traveled for three months across the Ethiopian dessert seeking safety after his village was attacked by government officials. He knows first hand what it is like to have nothing. He, therefore, sends between $100-$200 each month to a friend he knew back in Kenya. Because of this money, Dut ‟ s friend has saved enough to go to school and start a small buisness, which in turn keeps his  immediate and extended family fed. This young man was directly given the money that has now changed his life forever and because it was sent through and by the right sources, not intercepted by corrupt leaders, he has a hope for the future.  By sharing a small portion of Dut’s story in this paragraph I feel like I signaled an awareness of the audience by the fact that, instead of including someone else’s story, I incorporated someone I actually knew quite a bit about. By doing this, I believe that in the readers eye, it showed through in more than just words on a page.

According to Dambisa Moyo, author of the new highly controversial book Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa, only 10 percent of Africa’s population was in poverty, but 40 years have passed since that time and each day Africa continues to drown in a seemingly never-ending cycle of corruption, disease, poverty, and aid- dependency.  I feel like here I contributed my source to Dambisa Moyo but didn’t do it word for word. I put her thoughts on the subject into my own words but still contributed my source to her.
