Photosynthesis The process by which plants take in CO2 and H2O in the presence of sunlight to produce chemical energy using Chlorophyll. Reactants = CO2 + H2O + light energy must also be present but is not considered a reactant. Products = Sugar (C6H12O6) + O2

Respiration The process by which plants and animals break down stored chemical energy to produce energy for cells to move, grow, and reproduce. Reactants = Sugar (C6H12O6) + O2 Products = CO2 + H2O + energy (ATP)

Draw the Photosynthesis/Respiration Cycle.

Producers – Create their own energy by converting energy from the sun. Plants are producers.

Consumers – Can’t create their own energy so they get energy from producers or other consumers. Primary consumers get energy from producers.

Secondary consumers get energy from other consumers.

Decomposers get energy from breaking down dead things.

Relationships Predator prey One organism eats another organism

Relationships Mutualism Two individuals of different species work together and both individuals benefit. Clown fish and sea anemone

mutualism

Relationships Parasitism One organism benefits while the other organism is harmed Mosquitos Ticks Tapeworms Heartworms

Food chain Food chains show how energy transfers from one organism to another. In reality it is much more complex.

Food Web Most organisms don’t limit themselves to eating only one organism. Food webs show the relationships among many different organisms. Sun is the source of almost all energy.
