What is Cloud Computing?  A service that can be accessed through a web browser.  A database of “servers that supply applications and data”  A metaphor for the Internet since it can be accessed at any time from any location.

Features of Cloud Computing  Database of servers supplying applications and data: stores and manages data  No hardware or installation required  Services provided through the world wide web  Accessible from anywhere at any given time  Does not require effort to manage this service  No limit in size, is able to handle many data and information

History of Cloud Computing  1960s to 1970s  Using the mainframe time-sharing system to provide remote access to computing functions through networks  Constrain → Capacity of network

Advantages of Cloud Computing  Online file sharing → flexibility  Allows any employee to access the data at any location as long as there is Internet access  Workers are able to work closer to home → saving travelling time  Boost productivity  Backing up and retrieving data is much easier and is cost efficient compared to traditional backup and recovery methods  Capitalized expenditure → operational expenditure

Disadvantages of Cloud Computing  Information and data that is uploaded into the cloud can be accessed by a third-party cloud service provider → Security and privacy issues  Increase the chances of a company’s vulnerability to external attacks and hacks

What kind of companies can best utilize cloud computing?  Companies with smaller size  Companies which produce some products that may be outdated in the future  Companies which develop rapidly  Companies should not use cloud computing just because it is a new technology

Example of companies that use cloud computing – Amazon  Cloud computing services were launched in 2006 → Elastic Compute Cloud(EC2) : processing power → Simple Storage Service(S3) : storage  Popularize the idea that companies and individuals do not need to own computing resources  Amazon’s cloud computing service is even used by its rivals

Growth in usage 2007: 10 billion objects 2012: 905 billion objects

Example of companies that use cloud computing – Netflix  Making 3.7 billion annually  Most of its critical work is on the cloud through Amazon Web Services (AWS)  Without the help of AWS, Netflix would need to spend a lot more money on facilities → with the money saved, Netflix created a lot of original TV shows  Customers can use their service through nothing else but an Internet connection and browser  No hassle to update an application and unnecessary bloat ware

Example of companies that use cloud computing – Email Services  Users can access their emails “in the cloud” on devices with internet connection → Computer, phone, tablet  Emails are stored on servers instead of the local hardware → Saves memory → More reliable  Many different companies tried to follow their foot steps → VoIP, Skype, and other social media applications

Future of cloud computing  Market of cloud computing will grow larger →Increment in development of cloud computing → More applications will be available on the cloud  More companies will adopt cloud technology into their business  More innovation → Increases in computing power accompanied by decreased costs

Conclusion – Take-home Messages  Basic knowledge about cloud computing  The power of cloud computing  How to best utilize this technology
