Player Positions / Overlaps CVVOA – 8/24/2014

Player Positions - Rule 6.4 (.3.b) At the moment of serve (server hits ball): – In correct serving order – Each right-side player must have part of one foot touching the floor closer to right sideline than both feet of center player in corresponding row (Excluding server) – Each left-side player must have part of one foot touching the floor closer to left sideline than both feet of center player in corresponding row – Each front-row player must have part of one foot touching the floor closer to center line than both feet of corresponding back-row player After ball contacted for serve players may move 1

Understanding the Rule Adjacent Players 2 RF CF LF RB CB LB

Illegal Alignment Example RF not closer to right sideline than CF 3 RF CF LF RB CB LB

Understanding the Rule Corner Players – Have 2 Adjacent Players 4 RF CF LF RB CB LB

Understanding the Rule Center Players – Have 3 Adjacent Players 5 RF CF LF RB CB LB

Illegal Alignment Example CF not closer to center line than CB 6 RF CF LF RB CB LB

Legal Alignment Example RF CF LF RB CB LB CF and CB – Even is not illegal 7

Start Small (Crawl) First year officials – lots of other things to learn Pre-game – have R1 signal alignment faults Second / third year – keep it simple Who is the setter Are they front or back row What is the setter’s number Prior to each serve – where is each team’s setter (Most alignment faults involve the setter) I cheat – do something physical to remind whether front or back row setters 8

Visualizing Front / Back Row Try seeing triangles for front and back row 9 RF CF LF RB CB LB

You Make The Call Legal or Illegal? 10 RF CF LF RB CB LB

You Make The Call Setter LB* – Alignment Legal or Illegal? 15 RF CF LF RB CB LB*

You Make The Call Illegal 16 RF CF LF RB CB LB*

What About This Setter CB* – Alignment Legal or Illegal? 17 RF CF LF RB CB* LB

Preventative Officiating (“Art”) Objective is not to catch someone doing something wrong If cannot see an overlap without moving then they are good Warn coach if possible (be informative): – Coach, 23 needs to be careful they don’t leave early – Coach, 17 needs to be careful they don’t bail early on 23 – Coach, the rule states “At the moment of serve” Rare for R1 to call serving team for an overlap 18

Setter Front / Back Row Why is knowing so important? Can setter legally attack a ball above the net Back row setter in front zone jumps and sets ball which is higher than the top of the net… – Back row attack if ball crosses net plane without being touched by a front row player – Back row attach if other team’s blocker legally touches ball before setter’s front row player 19

Setter Front / Back Row (Cont.) Back row block if back row setter tries to save a ball in net plane and blocker legally touches ball Other team legally causes ball to touch back row setter… – If not considered a blocker, then legal and first team contact (two contacts left) – If considered a blocker, then illegal (back row block) 20

Expanding (Walk / Run) Pre-game – you are working on alignments R2 – use your line-up card Who is opposite the setter Later – who leads the setter Who follows the setter Ask partners what they do – try things and use what works for you 21

Thanks and Have Fun! 22
