R ENEWABLE AND NON - RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY Curriculum outcome: Students will be expected to identify and explain sources of electricity as renewable or non-renewable. Objective: Students will get a good understanding of what are renewable and non- renewable sources of energy.

CAN ANYBODY IDENTIFY THIS SYMBOL ? It is the Shell symbol you see when your parents get gas. This symbol represents a fossil. A fossil is the remnants of dead plants and animals that are buried deep in the earth’s crust. You might be familiar with fossils if you have ever visited Joggins, Nova Scotia where there are fossil cliffs.

Non-renewable refers to something that is there once and then it’s gone, and once that happens it will never come back. This applies to what we call “fossil fuels,” which are very important sources of energy that we rely on which includes oil and gas.

N ON - RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY F OSSIL FUELS ARE NON - RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES ; THEY INCLUDE : COAL, NATURAL GAS, AND PETROLEUM. A LL OF THE NON - RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES EXCEPT NUCLEAR FISSION USE FOSSIL FUELS. Natural resources such as coal, petroleum, oil and natural gas take thousands of years to form naturally and cannot be replaced as fast as they are being consumed. Eventually natural resources will become too costly to harvest and humanity will need to find other sources of energy.

Examples of renewable energy sources are:  solar energy  geothermal or natural steam energy  wind energy  hydro or water energy from rivers, tides, or ocean waves  biomass, including wood, plant fibers, dried animal dung (waste)  recycled metals Renewable sources of energy refer to resources that can be replaced in relatively short time period. Sources of energy that can be used over and over again without the fear of running out.

Soil, water, forests, plants, and animals are all renewable resources as long as they are adequately conserved.
