AMERICAN NURSES ASSOCIATION By Ronda Hanes, Ashley Huyck, & Kristen Ruddick

What is the ANA? The American Nurses Association (ANA) is “the only full-service professional organization representing the interest of the nation’s 3.1 million registered nurses” (2014). “The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public” (American Nurses Association, 2014).

Who created it? Founded by Isabel Hampton Robb (1859-1910) Bellevue Hospital Training School Head of Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Books Robb authored: Nursing: Its Principles and Practices Nursing Ethics Educational Standards for Nurses

Why was it created? “The ANA is the official voice of nursing and therefore is the primary advocate for nursing interests in general” (Black, 2014, p. 58). “The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public” (ANA, 2014).

How long has it been around? On September 2, 1896 members from ten different alumnae associations gathered in New York City to “organize a national professional association for nurses” (American Nursing Association, 2014).

ANA Code of Ethics “A succinct statement of the ethical obligations and duties of every individual who enters the nursing profession” (ANA, 2014). “The profession's nonnegotiable ethical standard” (ANA, 2014). “An expression of nursing's own understanding of its commitment to society” (ANA, 2014).

Features of Professional Nursing The ANA list the following six features essential in providing nursing care. Provision of a caring relationship that facilitates health and healing (ANA, 2014). Attention to the range of human experiences and responses to health and illness within the physical and social environments (ANA, 2014). Integration of objective data with knowledge gained from an appreciation of the patient or group's subjective experience (ANA, 2014).

Features of Professional Nursing Application of scientific knowledge to the processes of diagnosis and treatment through the use of judgment and critical thinking (ANA, 2014). Advancement of professional nursing knowledge through scholarly inquiry (ANA, 2014). Influence on social and public policy to promote social justice (ANA, 2014).

How does the ANA influence nursing practice? Ronda Hanes “Nursing is guided by standards of practice and standards of professional performance. Standards are authoritative statements by which the nursing profession describes the responsibilities for which its practitioners are accountable” (ANA, 2010, p. 12).

How does the ANA influence nursing practice? Ronda Hanes In my current position as a registered nurse working on the acute medical surgical floor, ANA practice standards influence my nursing practice by the use of the standards themselves. The nursing standards are a fundamental requirement for all nurses in order to provide appropriate evidenced based care and produce optimum results in patient care.

How does the ANA influence nursing practice? Ashley Huyck While working on a sub-acute rehab unit the ANA influences my practice greatly. I use the standards of practice with every patient interaction through assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning implementation, and evaluation. My nursing practice is also guided through evidence-based practice.

How does the ANA influence nursing practice? Kristen Ruddick In my current RN position on a busy MSP unit the “Scope and Standards of Practice guides nurses in the application of professional skills and responsibilities”(ANA, 2010). I use the following nursing standards to create Care Plans for each patient according to their needs and diagnoses. “Critical thinking underlies each step of the nursing process, problem solving, and decision-making. The nursing process is cyclical and dynamic; interpersonal and collaborative; and universally applicable”(ANA, 2010).
