{ Volume Procedures for Measuring Volume

 What is volume?  Volume is the amount of space taken up by a sample of matter.  What units are used to measure volume?  Volume is measured in liters (L) and milliliters (mL) as well as in cubic centimeters (cm 3 ) and cubic meters (m 3 ) All About Volume…

What tools can a scientist use to measure volume? What tools can a scientist use to measure volume? – Liquid Volume When measuring the volume of a liquid you need to use a graduated cylinder (mL and L). When measuring the volume of a liquid you need to use a graduated cylinder (mL and L). – Regular Solid When measuring the volume of a regular solid (such as a cube) you need to use a ruler (b x w x h) or (m 3 and cm 3 ). When measuring the volume of a regular solid (such as a cube) you need to use a ruler (b x w x h) or (m 3 and cm 3 ). – Irregular Solid Water displacement is used to measure the volume of an irregular solid (1 mL = 1cm 3 ). Water displacement is used to measure the volume of an irregular solid (1 mL = 1cm 3 ).

Place the graduated cylinder on a flat, solid surface. Place the graduated cylinder on a flat, solid surface. Your eyes must be at the level of the graduated cylinder. Do not pick it up! Your eyes must be at the level of the graduated cylinder. Do not pick it up! Pour the liquid to be measured into the graduated cylinder. Pour the liquid to be measured into the graduated cylinder. The proper volume is the line that is touched by the bottom of the curve (the meniscus) of the liquid in a glass cylinder. In a plastic graduated cylinder, there will be no meniscus. Procedure for Measuring with a Graduated Cylinder

Volume Lab 1. Record the volume of the graduated cylinder with red water. 2. Record the volume of the graduated cylinder with blue water. 3. Record the volume of the graduated cylinder with green water. 4. Pour exactly 95 mL of water into a graduated cylinder. Have your partner verify the amount and initial your lab book. 5. Pour exactly 52 mL of water into a graduated cylinder. Have your partner verify the amount and initial your lab book. 6. Find the volume of the copper cylinder and the black nylon spacer.

Volume Lab 7. Find the volume of the 3 rectangular prisms (clear, white and silver). 8. Find the volume of the plastic dice with the graduated cylinder and with the ruler. 9. Summarize what you have learned about mass and volume. 10. When done get a golf ball and beaker to measure the golf ball volume. Record how you calculated the volume of golf ball.
