PHASE II FLIGHT-SAFETY REVIEW AMS-02 EXPERIMENT sub-detector SILICON TRACKER Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007

2Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 AMS02 – Building Blocks Silicon Tracker is a tracking detector and it is the core of AMS-02. It is surrounded by the others sub-detectors or sub-systems.

3Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 The AMS 02 Detector Silicon Tracker Z, P, 

4Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Characteristics of AMS-02 Δ t = 100 ps, Δx = 10 µm, Δv/v = 0.001 y06K307 He,Li,Be,..Fe P e–e– He, C P, D e+e+ TRD TOF Tracker RICH ECAL ––– – Physics example Antimatter Cosmic Ray Physics Strangelets Dark matter 

5Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Silicon Tracker It is composed by: -3 inner double face detector plane -2 single face detector plane

6Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Silicon Tracker Each Ladders is a multi-wafer silicon detector, with the read-out electronics Assembly view

7Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Silicon Tracker Each plane is composed by many: “Ladders”

8Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Tracker - Ladder

9Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Vibration tests of the cables and connexions cable alone cable bundle connexions/cables for a 3-layer column Mechanical behaviour and fixation scheme were studied thanks to the vibration table of University of Bern. Mr Beat Zahnd No problems found for cables, connectors and connexions Distance between cable fixations were determined (for vacuum case)

10Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Plane 1

11Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Silicon Tracker The final configuration of the Tracker, is done by adding: - external shells; - The upper and lower conical flange;

12Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 FM AMS-02 Silicon Tracker

13Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Silicon Tracker Design Partially re-flown hardware (shell and honeycomb planes) AMS-01 – STS-91 mission ‘98; Main assessment for Tracker, have been: -Bolt Analysis (NSTS 08307 Tracker Bolt Assessment.pdf) -Declared Material List (AMS_Tracker_DMLv2.xls) -Fracture of Composite (Memo_Fracture_control_composite.doc) -Venting

14Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Tracker - Venting To equalize the pressure inside the Tracker with the pressure in the payload bay during launch and landing, the Upper and Lower Conical Flanges each contain two light traps, filtered vents.

15Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 Tracker - Venting The four light tight, filtered vents permit air to exit or enter the enclosed Tracker volume of 40.26 ft 3

16Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 TTCS – Tracker Thermal Control System The Objective of TTCS is to provide accurate temperature control of AMS02 Tracker front-end electronics. We use: Two redundant CO 2 two-phase pumped loops –Primary loop –Secondary Loop TTCE Tracker Thermal Control Electronics

17Roberto Battiston - AMS-02 Phase II Safety Review - Houston JSC May 21-25, 2007 TTCS System Overview
