2 Annotated bibliography Summarizes critical points of current knowledge pertinent to your object of study: – significant discussions, – historical and current context – theoretical and methodological approaches Cites scholarly articles, books, book chapters and relevant non- scholarly sources (e.g. reviews, interviews, exhibition catalogues) Your annotation will provide context / justification for selecting specific texts. – Identify the discipline, place, time, perspective of writer (may require additional research), as well as their argument – Summarize relevant aspects of the text, identify points of difference, state how it will be useful for your research

3 Purpose of literature reviews Place one's original work in the context of existing literature Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort Point the way forward for further research Places each work within the context of its contribution to the understanding of the subject under review Identify new ways to interpret, and gaps in, previous research Describe the relationship of each work to the others under consideration Addresses conflicts amongst seemingly contradictory previous studies

4 Process Define your topic, the scope and research questions pertaining to your topic Search for materials: use search tools to find materials about your topic Read and evaluate what you have found in order to select material that makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the topic
