Background  Numerous structured problem solving methodologies exist. We often lack the discipline to follow them completely. There is a natural tendency to jump to conclusions We are influenced by pre-conceived solutions. “We cannot solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used to create them” – Albert Einstein

Acceptance – the first step towards improvement  If we are going to jump to our preferred solutions, before we understand our problem….. Lets at least apply some solution criteria.

Effective Solutions- 1  How does the solution prevent re-occurrence of original problem? Mandate that this answer is documented.

Effective Solutions - 2  Can you control the solution? Is solution outside your sphere of influence? It is important to understand and appreciate your sphere of influence. If the solution to your problem is outside your sphere of influence, how confident are you that your problem will not be repeated? You may need to take a two tiered approach to the solution. Take action within your sphere of influence to protect your zone, while recommending the solution to a higher level.

Effective Solutions - 3  Should the solution come from a different or higher organization or level. If so, who… Viable options can be top down, middle out, or bottom up. Think about how to drive the desired change in the most synergistic manner.

Effective Solutions - 4  Could the solution cause another problem somewhere else? Consider what will happen to surrounding processes and systems when the solution is implemented. It is important to consider the effect of implementing the solution. A worse situation could result if you merely transfer your problem to someone else.

Effective Solutions - 5  Is re-training part of the solution? If re-training is the solution, what will be done to make it more effective than the previous training? Re-training is a solution frequently chosen but is one of the least effective solutions. Something must change to make this solution work.

Effective Solutions- 6  Is the solution a procedure change? If it’s a procedure change, remember that procedures are necessary but are often overlooked, Underutilized or misunderstood. Instead, try to design to prevent human error. Mistake proof!!

Effective Solutions - 7  Is the solution implementable? Is it realistic to expect that all steps of the solution can (and will) be implemented within the given time frame? Explain the implementation steps.
