The problem Lectures/meetings can be passive and people get disengaged https://www.flickr.com/photos/pagedooley/13905987989://w.flikr.com/photos/pagedooley/13905987989

The problem In large lectures it is hard to tell whether students understand the material https://pixabay.com/static/uploads/photo/2013/04/19/01/15/university-105709_640.jpg

The problem People can be reluctant to ask questions if they are worried about being embarrassed http://pad2.whstatic.com/images/thumb/0/0e/Shy-Student-Doesn't-Raise-Hand.png/670px-Shy-Student-Doesn't-Raise-Hand.png

How we approached this problem Asking questions of students in lectures is an effective way to check engagement and understanding. We need to be able to ask ALL the students at once. We need a tool that will support 350+ users. We need a tool that is easy for teachers and students to use. We need a tool that doesn’t store student data.

How we approached this problem We need a tool that works with our existing university systems We need a tool that looks professional. We would like a tool that offers a range of different question types We would like a tool that integrates with PowerPoint

How we approached this problem According to our 2015 Student Survey, 98% of our students have a smartphone or laptop https://pixabay.com/en/smartphone-touchscreen-communication-312816/

Trying it out CBE ran a small pilot of PollEverywhere in the second half of Semester 2 with four lecturers STAT3036/8036 BUSN2015/7050 STAT2032 FINM8007 FINM2002/7041 Lecture sizes ~100 – 250 Response rates ~ 10% - 50%

A good tool to get the class involved in discussion. Dr Ding should be commended on her efforts to engage a mainly shy student cohort who speak English as their second language. The system is clearly good, but i think it works well only based on the assumption that everyone is really into the class. the whole discussion process can be recorded clearly completely new discussion form i never attempt before very impressed and surprised idea to involve us to participant It is really interesting that I will think more about the question before I sent the answer to the screen Also help me focus on the class content POLL might improve the participation by giving an extra credits for pp who attempt question for more than 90% for the semester

What next? CBE has a license that supports up to 1000 participants and unlimited presenters in simultaneous sessions. Training and support will be provided from the start of 2016. Please contact me (Colin Simpson) in the CBE Education Innovation Office for more information.
