3. Sample Lesson Plan-Constructivist Theory

4. Intro (how do you capture their attention and get them interested?): Write “Drugs and Alcohol” on the board. Body (what comes after your interesting intro?) The topic of drugs and alcohol is written on the board. The students will be asked to think about what words come to mind when they hear drugs and alcohol. Each student will write down what they think the 10 most important words are going to be in this unit. Give them about 3-5 minutes to do this. Once each student has their list they will compare them with one another in groups. Groups should be 3-4 people. In the small groups they will compose a new list of 10 words that they believe are most important. Then each group will write their list on the board. As a class we will go over the lists and look for similarity. Erase any words that repeat. From this we will be able to create a new list of the 10 most important words. Circle the words we want to choose. If there are words that I want them to have that are not on the list I will make sure to add it. Also I will ask the class if they see any patterns. This could be like types of drugs, alcohol, treatment, addiction. Once we have our top 10 list of most important words. Hand out 10 notecards per student. Each student will have to pick a word they want to define. Some people can choose to work together depending on the class size. They must come up with a definition and use it in their own sentence. Once everyone has gotten their word they are allowed to use whatever they want to get the definition as long as they use a respectable source. The will have 10 minutes to get the information and sentence figured out. As they work I will be walking around monitoring the students’ progress during the activity. Next, each student will present their word to the class. The students will be expected to write these words and definitions down on their note cards and the sentence. *Make sure to correct any student and make note of their definitions.* Some words may lead into questions and comments, which is fine as long as it stays on topic.
