St. Asicus Our school is called after Saint Asicus. It was opened on April 2 nd, 1981. This means that our school is 30 years old on April 2 nd this year.
2
Asicus didn’t think that he was worthy of his high office as bishop. Asicus left Roscommon and travelled to Rathlin O'Beirne Island in Donegal Bay.
3
He resigned his office and became a hermit. He lived for a while at the top of Sliabh Liag (Slieve League) in Donegal. He remained there for seven years
4
Some of the monks of Elphin came in search of him. They persuaded him to return to Elphin with them. By now Asicus was not in good health.
5
Asicus died on the journey back to Elphin (circa. 490 AD). He is buried where he died ~ between Ballyshannon and Donegal town
6
St. Asicus is the patron saint of coppersmiths. He was a skilled coppersmith and silversmith. He made altars, chalices, patens, and metal book-covers for the newly founded churches.
7
His copper work can be seen in the Cathedral in Sligo. You can see a shamrock patterned beaten brass altar screen
8
In the Cathedral you can also see a wooden statue of St. Asicus. It is thought to be the only statue of St. Asicus in existence.
9
All of the past pupils and teachers who were in the school thirty years are invited to the 30 th anniversary celbebration on April 2 nd 2011.
