2 Muhammed (570-632) Born in Mecca, (modern- day Saudi Arabia) He is the “guiding, human spirit of the religion” At age 40 began to receive God’s words through Angel Gabriel It became his mission to convey God’s message This would be documented in the Qur’an

3 Muhammad (cont.) Was to be the last prophet on Earth Received messages ‘verses’ at a time, began teaching These messages became engraved into Islamic Law

4 The 5 Pillars of Islam 1. Make the testimony of faith- “There is no God but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God” 2. Pray five times daily, facing toward Mecca 3. Give money to the poor 4. Fasting during daylight hours of Ramadan, the holy month 5. Make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in lifetime, it is enough to want to go.. for some

5 Qur’an “Recitation” God referred to as “Allah” His final revelation, took place over a span of 23 years Acknowledges parts of Jewish and Christian scriptures Teaches about life and death, heaven and hell

7 Qur’an Prohibits: -worshipping idols -eating pork -drinking liquor -gambling Sharia -sacred law of Islam -Religion as law, God’s words as law

8 Key Concepts No human can intervene between God and another person. All believers are equal, men + women..except in social context
