3 Lead Introduce yourself to the reader by identifying your interest, role, group, or angle for writing Do not begin by stating your name! Connect with the reader; understand that your are writing to one person or one small group Explain your purpose. State your purpose/thesis clearly and concisely.

4 Major Point 1 State the most important idea that supports the thesis Include evidence that develops the idea Explain each piece of evidence and speak directly to the reader of your letter Make sure that you use persuasive appeals that are appropriate for your reader Sum up the paragraph

5 Major Point 2 State the next idea that supports the thesis Include evidence that develops the idea Explain each piece of evidence and speak directly to the reader of your letter Make sure that you use persuasive appeals that are appropriate for your reader Sum up the paragraph

6 Major Point 3 This major point statement should explain why the reader’s opposing argument is not as strong as your position (similar to an editorial) Use evidence to develop your argument Explain all evidence Sum up the paragraph

7 Conclusion Leave the reader with something to think about Recap your supporting ideas, but do not repeat the same words Make a prediction of what might happen if no action is taken Issue a positive call to action – tell the reader what to do or believe
