2 Second Amendment II - Right to keep and bear arms A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

3 President Obama What were the executive actions that President Obama took to put restrictions on who could or could not own a gun?

4 Summary Read the information given to you and write a summary or a few key points on your white boards to share with the class.

5 What do you think? Is this a good idea? Why? Or Why Not?

6 Where do you stand? Do you favor having laws to restrict who can own a gun? Do you favor following the second amendment and allowing every American the right to own a gun? We will debate this position as a team.

7 Each side will research the following: Each side will find facts and evidence to support their beliefs. Main arguments FOR/AGAINST gun control Key court decisions or gun laws that support your viewpoint. Gun control positions of the major political parties The activities of special interest groups on each side of the issue How U.S. gun laws compare to those of other countries

8 With the information found….. Create two of the following to support your viewpoint: Brochure Poster Power Point Prezi Song Commercial Anything you can think of that I didn’t. Information should be detailed, include pictures, and be neat.

9 Requirements… Each individual will write a five paragraph essay supporting their viewpoint on the gun control issue. MLA Format

10 Debate…..  Each group will give an opening statement that should include statistics, quotes, and other facts based on their research.  After the opening statements, each group may ask two questions of the opposing side. (Remind students to try to anticipate questions--and their own responses--from the opposing side.  Groups will take turns asking questions; give them one minute to ask a question and two minutes to answer.  Each side is given the opportunity to present their argument, then ask and answer two questions.
