2 Why is it good?  It has good consequences  People know what is in their own best interest  People are different  Governments are a bit shit  People have “rights”  Our laws embed certain principles about what you should be able to do  Everyone is entitled to things

3 Why is it bad?  Liberties conflict with each other; your choice impacts on someone else’s choice  Sometimes the government is better positioned to understand your interests  People make really stupid choices (or might not even be making the choices in reality!)

4 But can you actually change behaviour?  Deterrent effect  Physically restraining perpetrators from engaging in the act, i.e. prison  Discourse effect

5 What if you can’t?  It is bad that people go to jail  You create a black market  You might create discursive backlash e.g. laws restraining hate speech

6 3 Questions to answer in a liberty debate  Do we want people to be making a particular choice?  If we don’t, can the government stop them?  To the extent that they can’t, what harms occur?  (write these down, you’re about to debate about this)
