2 Johnson Becomes President After JFK’s death, vice president Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President Johnson was called LBJ and his administration was called the Great Society

3 Civil Rights Act of 1964 Johnson pushed through the Civil Rights act, started by JFK This law ended segregation in the South and outlawed discrimination

4 The War on Poverty LBJ called for a “war on poverty” Supported a series of programs to help poor people. VISTA was created, to send volunteers to help poor communities

5 What do you think? Do Great Society programs like welfare for poor people help people get out of poverty, or do they make people lazy? Do you know what the expression means, “standing on your own two feet?” Does working in pairs help students learn better, or does it make students lazy and lead to copying?

6 The Great Society agenda President Johnson was inspired by FDR’s New Deal. He wanted to improve the US in four areas: Health and welfare Housing Education Consumer and environmental protection

7 The Voting Rights Act In response to civil rights protests in Selma Alabama, Johnson pushed through the Voting Rights Act By 1965 250,000 African Americans registered to vote
