2 Simile-using like or as to compare 2 things. Ex. The butterfly was as beautiful as nature. Ex. Chelsey was as busy as a bee.

3  Metaphor-Comparing 2 things without using like or as.  Ex. Tori said the noise was music to her ears.  Ex. My sister’s hair is a rat’s nest.

4 Hyperbole –using exaggeration to make a point. Ex. You snore louder than a freight train. Ex. It’s going to take a zillion years to get out of middle school.

5  Onomatopoeia- Sound words  Ex. The Mom said boo-hoo when her child didn’t get his way.  Ex. Tramaine mumbled when he didn’t get his fried chicken.

6 Alliteration- repetition of beginning sound. Ex. Silly Sammy super slapped herself. Ex. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.

7  Personification- Giving human qualities to something not human.  Ex. Hey, Diddle, Diddle, the cat and the fiddle. The cow jumped over the moon; the little dog laughed to see such sport. And the dish ran away with the spoon.

8  Idiom- A well known expression that does not mean what it says.  Ex. The power point was a piece of cake.  Ex. My mom is the apple of my eye.

9  She is older than the hills.  The thunder went boom when it stormed.  She sold 20 seashells by the shore.  My dad’s boss is as bold as Mr. Clean.  Come hell or high water.  The rain kissed my cheek as it fell.  The waves broke like a tree limb.
