1 COMPARE AND CONTRAST The Organization Adapted from various sources

2 PURPOSE Can discuss only similarities Can discuss only differences
More often, discuss both

3 ORGANIZATION - Block Block Method
Each subject is discussed in full, explaining each point of comparison First: All of “A” Second: All of “B” Point 1 (plus support) Point 1 (plus support) Point 2 (plus support) Point 2 (plus support) Point 3 (plus support) Point 3 (plus support)

4 Organization – to insure unity
Each subtopic (point) in “A” must be discussed in “B” Subtopics (points) should be discussed in the same order in both parts “A” and “B.” Subtopics (points) in “B” should generally include reminders of each point made in “A.”

5 Guidelines for Success - 1
Clear thesis statement that identifies what is to be compared and the point being made about the comparison (last sentence in introductory paragraph) Choose points about the topic to compare/contrast Use specific and relevant examples for support (Remember the A-B-C format for expository writing). Give equal treatment to both elements you are discussing Use transitional words/phrases to help reader understand similarities/differences: just as, similarly, unlike, in contrast to, whereas, while

6 Guidelines for Success - 2
Conclude paper by restating thesis, summarizing the main points of comparison, and give the reading a final “so what” of the major similarities and differences: – So what does all this reveal, or help with, or get us to see?

7 Example Block Method Thesis: Although dogs are often called man’s best friend, cats make more convenient pets. Part A – Cats Part B – Dogs Point 1 – Cleanliness Point 1 – Cleanliness Point 2 – Exercising Point 2 – Exercising Point 3 – Training Point 3 - Training

8 Example Block Method Part A 1. Cats clean themselves.
2. Cats exercise without being walked. 3. Cats require no training. Part B In contrast to cats, dogs must be bathed. Unlike cats, dogs need regular walks. Whereas cats require no training, dogs need training to help behavior.

9 Thesis Statement (7th Ex.)
Identify not only the subjects to be compared and contrasted, but the point you will make about them. One way to start a compare and contrast essay is by using words like whereas, while, even though, although, however to suggest contrast Example: While both narrators are adult men, the narrators in the nonfiction piece “Barrio Boy” and the fictional story “A Day’s Wait” reveal themselves and their feelings differently.
