2 MODIFIERS - a word, phrase, or clause that modifies (or describes) another word. An adjective or adverb is a modifier because it adds detail or meaning to another word.

3 MISPLACED MODIFIER - a modifier that finds itself in the wrong place in a sentence. Example: The fisherman left his live sack of bait on the dock.

4 MODIFIER PLACEMENT AND VARIOUS MEANINGS The instructor just nodded to Tamara as she came in. (The instructor only nodded) The instructor nodded just to Tamara as she came in. (She only nodded to Tamara and no one else) The instructor nodded to Tamara just as she came in. (She nodded as soon as she came in)

5 ANOTHER EXAMPLE The vendor almost sold all of her pottery at the crafts fair. The vendor sold almost all of her pottery at the crafts fair.

6 WHAT IS WRONG? She served hamburgers to the children on paper plates. This sentence says that the children were on paper plates, not the hamburgers. She served hamburgers on paper plates to the children.

7 CORRECT THESE I smelled the oysters coming down the stairs for dinner. I saw the dead dog driving down the interstate. I’m looking for a small table for my kid with short legs.
