Session Objectives
Understand how to work in a healthy and safe way whilst on placement,
Understand the impacts of the Health and Safety Act on both employers and employees.

3. Positions In An Organisation
Whilst on placement you need to know
the requirements of Health and Safety at Work Act
how to spot Safety Hazards (assessing risk)
precautions to prevent accidents
the location and how to use required safety equipment
reporting procedures for any accidents or incidents
name and responsibilities of first aiders and health and safety representatives
procedures for reporting emergencies and certain accidents
own rights and responsibilities

4. Spot the Hazards - Office
There are 10 things in this picture that may be a health and safety hazard, leading to a serious accident. Circle the ones you can see and write on the back of the sheet why you think it is a hazard.

5. 1 Frayed flex on electric fire - should be discarded and it is also a trip hazard.
2 Trailing wires from desk - trip hazard.
3 The box is too heavy to carry - over 15 kg - use 2 people and a trolley.
4 Too many drawers open at one time in the filing cabinet - open one at a time.
5 Bottom drawer left open in filing cabinet - this is a trip hazard.
6 Carrying too many files - should be able to see over whatever is being carried.
7 Turned up mat is a trip hazard, as are holes in any floor covering.
8 Files stored on top of tall filing cabinet - they could fall on someone.
9 Fire exit blocked by boxes.
10 Open fire needs a fire guard for safety. Out of date electrical equipment should be discarded.
