2 I. Facts about Visual/Audio Aids
Research states that we pay 25 times as much attention to visual information as we do to audio information. Visual aids are meant to enhance your speech, not replace it.

3 II. Examples of Visual/Audio Aids
A. 2-Dimensional Aids Photographs Drawings/ cartoons Charts/Diagrams/graphs Maps Dry Erase Board Handouts B. 3-Dimensional Aids Models Cutaways C. Projections Transparencies (for an overhead projector) Video (keep to 30 seconds or less) Slides D. Sound Recordings (Keep to 30 seconds or less)

4 III. Rules for Visual Aids
A. Make sure that they are large enough for everyone to see. B. Keep it short and simple 1. Do not overwhelm your audience with too much content (pictures, words, etc.) 2. For example, if you are using a Powerpoint, stick to the 6 x 6 rule. a. No more than 6 bullets per slide. b. No more than 6 words per bullet.

C. Always have a back up plan in case something goes wrong. D. Color Awareness – make sure that the colors of the writing contrast enough with the background 1. Ex. Black font on dark blue background is not a good idea. E. For Powerpoint, make sure that the font is no smaller than 32 pt. 1. Otherwise, it is hard to read. F. Practice, practice, practice. 1. Especially practice with any technology that you will be using prior to presenting a. i.e. televisions, CD players, projectors, DVD players, VCRs, etc.

6 IV. Visual Aid Use Don’t stand in front of the Visual Aid.
Reference your visual aid during the presentation. Move smaller aids closer to the class. Hold it up long enough for the audience to see. Put the aid away when you are done with it. Speak to the audience, not the Visual Aid.
