Short-term needs extra rest and health care after being unwell more attention from a key person for a child new to the setting Long-term needs help in adapting to the use of glasses or a hearing aid reassurance and access to an inhaler for a child who has asthma

5 CACHE Level 2 Child Care and Education © Hodder Education 2008 Security: In their first year, babies may need a comfort blanket or favourite toy. Routine: babies and young children need routine and predictability – this increases their self-esteem. Attachment: children need a steady, caring relationship with empathetic adults. (In child care settings, the key person system helps to meet this need.) The need for love and security

6 CACHE Level 2 Child Care and Education © Hodder Education 2008 The need for new experiences Exploration: Children learn from their experiences – this is cognitive or intellectual development. Play: In the early years, children use play to explore their world and learn how to cope with it.

7 CACHE Level 2 Child Care and Education © Hodder Education 2008 The need for praise and recognition Children need to feel that their efforts as well as their achievements are recognised. You can do this by always encouraging and praising children when they have tried hard or have achieved something new, however small it might seem.

8 CACHE Level 2 Child Care and Education © Hodder Education 2008 The need for responsibility Children need to gain independence: Encourage them to look after themselves, e.g. dressing, washing hands. Provide challenges in line with interests and ability levels.
