AGENDA: 9/18 Bellwork (Journal) Quizzes on Ch.1-3 Show Journal assignment on turnitin.com Go over Character Chart Discuss Chapter 1-3 BRIEFLY Read Ch. 4 in class (Jigsaw it!) Homework: Read Chapter 5; complete Symbol Chart (only the “beginning” section); complete questions, vocab, and journal for Ch. 1-3.

Discussing Characters As a group, I want you to share the quotes you found for each of the four characters on the chart. Based on your discussion, find five words for each character that you think BEST describe them. When you have found your words, send a group member up to write them on the appropriate chart around the room! Be prepared to provide textual evidence to support your answers!

KEY ideas: Chapter 1 Interactions between certain characters (Piggy and Ralph, Ralph and Jack, etc) –Piggy and Ralph alone vs in a group –Ralph and Jack’s regard for each other The role of the conch shell –Only allowed to speak If you hold it The “explorers” behavior and general mood as they scout the island –Very fun and light-hearted; giddy; adventurous Jack’s behavior at the end of the chapter when he does not catch the wild pig. – “They knew very well why he hadn’t: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood.” – “I was choosing a place. Next time--!”

KEY ideas: Chapter 1

KEY ideas: Chapter 2 Ralph’s role as leader – “All at once he found he could talk fluently and explain what he had to say.” – “The simple statement, unbacked by any proof but the weight of Ralph’s new authority, brought light and happiness.” – “The assembly was lifted toward safety by his words. They liked and now respected him.” How the boys go about creating a society – “We’ll have rules!...Lots of rules!” The effect of the “beastie” on the group – “He felt himself facing something ungraspable.” The boys’ lack of foresight in regards to the fire – “The shameful knowledge grew in them and they did not know how to begin confession.” – “You got your small fire alright.” The stealing of Piggy’s glasses Simon’s role (he only speaks once) Jack’s interaction with Piggy Piggy as the voice of reason – “Then, with the martyred expression of a parent who has to keep up with the senseless ebullience of the children, he picked up the conch, turned towards the forest, and began to pick his way over the tumbled scar.”

KEY ideas: Chapter 3 Jack as hunter – “Jack himself shrank at this cry with a hiss of indrawn breath, and for a minute became less a hunter than a furtive thing, ape-like among the tangle of trees.” – “He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up.” The general “feel” of the island – “As if it wasn’t a good island…” – “You…feel as if you’re not hunting, but—being hunted.” The changing dynamic between Ralph and Jack – “They looked at each other, baffled, in love and hate. All the warm salt water of the bathing pool and the shouting and splashing and laughing were only just sufficient to bring them together again.” Simon’s secret place
