Theme Sanctification and Comfort in Christ

Purpose of Writing This letter is written primarily for the purpose of encouraging and comforting the Thessalonian believers.

1 Thessalonians 2:14... for you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen....

1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

Survey of I Thessalonians 1. The Argument of I Thessalonians 2. Christ in I Thessalonians 3. Place in the Canon

The Argument 1. Jesus will descend. 2. His descent will be heralded. 3. Dead believers will be raised. 4. All will join Christ in eternity.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

Christ in I Thessalonians 1. The Savior (from idolatry) 2. The Savior (from sin) 3. The Savior (from death)

The Savior from idolatry 1 Thessalonians 1:9 For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God.

The Savior from sin 1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification....

The Savior from death 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Place in the Canon Historically, we see another doctrinal misunderstanding in the early church. Theologically, we learn that Christ’s work will not be done until we are with him. Devotionally, we ought to glorify him for his mercy to us and be faithful to him. Devotionally, we ought to glorify him for his mercy to us and be faithful to him.
