Doing Applied Science

Why the Poor Link to the Applied Environment? When you understand what is real, how to apply it is a relatively minor matter In essence this claim is based on a mechanistic conception The alternative: The product of science is words and we are just talking for pragmatic purposes

Goals Are Primary The goals of functional contextualism: Prediction and influence with precision, scope, and depth How to evaluate: coherence, parsimony, utility, and progressivity across abstractive levels

Precision and Scope Avoiding the dangers of affirming the consequent, despite its inevitability Tightening the link between theories and auxiliaries, especially in the measurement of processes Tightening of the link between theories and manipulable technique

RFT Scope is what basic science is all about Model of applied – basic relations wrong –Basic application model –Basic analysis model –Mutual obligation model ACT / RFT model: Mutual interest

Mutual Interest As basic researchers gather around the issue, these developments need to be fostered and linked to application through middle level concepts and applied theory Only a few labs are needed as “water boys” to bridge the work in both directions Why this works: it tests scope

Elements Basic research leading to refined principles Basic research on complex processes Development of multilevel assessment of processes Technique building / dismantling studies focused on applied theory Tests of packages of multiple levels of complexity with refined control conditions designed to test the theory Examination of the theory in other domains Dissemination and training studies

Elements Specify theoretical rationale (theory of the disorder) Specify causal chain (theory of treatment; mechanisms) Demonstrate feasibility; e.g., acceptability, safety Specific process measures (operationalize causal chain) Establish reliability of process measures Provide provisional therapist manual specifying procedures Specify pilot testing procedures (if applicable) Specify whether and which procedures will be modified, and the basis for the modification Provide completed therapist manual specifying procedures

Therapists Specify inclusion criteria (requirements)/how measured Justify any exclusion criteria for therapists Establish availability of needed therapists Specify assessment measures administered to therapists Provide descriptive data for therapists Specify procedures for assigning cases to therapists Specify procedures for training and certifying therapists Establish reliability of therapist adherence measures Specify therapist competency measures and reliability Specify dissemination strategies and their feasibility Specify measures of diffusion, adoption Provide training outcome data

Elements Identify target population (heterogeneity/homogeneity) Specify inclusion criteria Justify any exclusion criteria Address gender/minority representation Establish capability to recruit the needed sample Document retention rate in treatment
