2 Outside Interest Paid or unpaid activities for, and relationships with, an external entity that utilize the same skills and knowledge associated with your U-M job responsibilities. (This does not apply to professional society memberships.) Ownership in a company or business, including equity, stock, or stock options Intellectual property rights or interests, including license and option agreements made through the Office of Technology Transfer for technology, etc. developed at U-M, and non-UM patents, copyrights, and royalties Compensation, loans, or items of value received from external entities for activity related to you U-M job responsibilities (not including student loans) Travel expenses that are reimbursed to you or paid directly by an external entity, as required by PHS regulations(link is external) and/or your unit's COI policyPHS regulations(link is external)

3 Conflict of Interest Own a business that does business with the University Have interest in a business that competes with the University Have a relationship that could bias or impact your judgement regarding your University duties

4 Disclosure Requirements Full Time Faculty: Outside Interests (Minform) – upon hire – any time your outside interests change – annually in July. Everyone Else: Known or suspected Conflict of Interest (Paper) – Within two weeks of the activity.

Outside Interest Disclosure: You and your family Family = family members include spouse, domestic partners and dependents *Faculty and staff must not use their official University positions or influence to further gain or advancement for themselves, parents, siblings, spouse or partner, children, dependent relatives, or other personal associates, at the expense of the University.

6 But wait, there’s more! Nepotism – Disclosures made upon hire and annually – Management plans created by Human Resources Physician Open Payments (Sunshine) Act – Payments by manufacturers are reported to government/public. Can be compared to individual COI data through FOIA Disclosure COI to Chair of committees on which you sit Disclosures to students may be needed
