LINAC4 COMMISSIONING 1 LESSONS LEARNT DURING MY VISIT AT LINAC4 COMMISSIONING Evangelia Vaena, 02/02/2016

2 OUTLINE What was the status of commissioning activities when I joined Lessons learnt Rack pre-commissioning checks Cable pre-commissioning checks LINAC IV COMMISSIONING EXPERIENCE

COMMISSIONING PHASES 3 Linac4 is a 160 MeV H- ions accelerator, which will replace the 50 MeV proton Linac2 as injector for the CERN complex from 2016. Linac4 is about 100 m long, normal- conducting, and housed in a tunnel, 12 m below ground, on the CERN Meyrin site. Linac4 is commissioned in several stages, starting from the low energy end (3 MeV test stand) and after alternating phases of commissioning at intermediate energies (12, 50, 100,160 MeV). The different stages are detailed below (taken from: LINAC4 COMMISSIONING STRATEGY J.B. Lallement, G. Bellodi, M. Eshraqi, M. Garcia Tudela, A.M. Lombardi, P. A. Posocco, E. Sargsyan, J. Stovall, CERN, Geneva, Switzerland) :

4 Stage 1: with the use of the 3 MeV test stand, commissioning of the Source, LEBT, RFQ and Chopper line Stage 2: The LEBT, RFQ and chopper line will be re-commissioned in the tunnel Stage 3: The DTL tank1 (12 MeV) will be installed and commissioned Stage 4: DTL tanks 2&3 are installed and commissioned Stage 5: CCDTL is installed and commissioned Stage 6: PIMS is installed and commissioned. stage witnessed, 10- 12 November COMMISSIONING PHASES

LESSONS LEARNT 5 But…. Beam commissioning is a process full of unexpected events: Of the 2,5 days I have spent there, we had beam only half a day…. And also life is full of surprises: When I got to CERN my access card was not prepared, so another half a day was wasted on this… LESSON LEARNT 1: Make sure that the administrative/ paper work is done before you get there LESSON LEARNT 1I: Try to arrange back-up meetings with CERN colleagues (in case there is a pause/problem at the commissioning activities) LESSON LEARNT 1II: Try to attend for at least one week to fully comprehend the flow of the activities and familiarise with the GUI

THE END 6 THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION!!

PRE-COMMISSIONING CHECKS 7 Common tests on racks and cabling during installation and pre commissioning phase (main focus on hardware checks, signal testing mostly performed by controls) The list of checks is indicative and non-exhaustive

PRE-COMMISSIONING CHECKS ON RACK CABINETS 8 A check list should be prepared, for each rack, including as minimum the following: 1. Visual Inspection (correct mounting, tagging, grounding connection, no physical damages, mechanical components operational, internal lighting, etc.) 2. Cooling properly installed and working 3. Mains connection, cross check with drawings and diagrams, megger test of circuit breakers, check UPS connection 4. Crate installation (label, power connection, wiring according to drawings, appropriate fixing, cables properly terminated, grounding connection in place) 5. Inner rack cabling laid checked 6. Basic functionality checks (e.g. verification of drivers) 7. SCADA or other Control Systems connection in place and working (Control interface operational, patch panels, PLC operational, server responsive) 8. Check if all quality forms and documentation is available and approved, devices registered in CCDB

PRE-COMMISSIONING CHECKS ON CABLING-1 9 Another check list should be prepared for each cable. Minimum cable checks: 1. Visual inspection, best practices kept during pulling, adequate mechanical support and correct fastening, segregation of cables of different ratings 2. Continuity test. Verify that each cable is at its proper position, correctly tagged (and same label at both ends!!) 3. Insulation Resistance testing (Megger test). Check cable integrity conductor-to-conductor, conductor-to- shielding, shielding-to-earth. 4. Connector connection check (appropriate lugs/connectors are used according to cable type, correct crimping, use of heat shrinking sheath were needed) 5. For power and grounding conductors, special attention shall be given to the sequence and correct installation of accessories picture from CERN IT-3818/EN

PRE-COMMISSIONING CHECKS ON CABLING-1I 10 6. Similar checks for signal and control cabling: wiring and terminations according to drawings, grounding connection where needed, core marking. Make sure that proper tools have been used. 7.Connectivity: Perform I/O test with control interface: Check that Software objects are connected to the correct Hardware objects 8. For instrumentation cabling: loop checks (continuity of the signal between instrument-junction box- DCS that is from field to control room) 9.Fill test protocol before continuing on commissioning

BEFORE BEAM COMMISSIONING 11 All the checks are a prerequisite but not sufficient to ensure that we are in a position to start the machine. All the interlocks, alarms, safety procedures (Lock-in-Tag-out for example) should also be checked.

12 NOW IS THE ACTUAL END QUESTIONS??
