RIGGING COMMUNICATION Industry Fundamentals and Occupational Safety Unit 6
3
Communication: The use of communication is to ensure proper safety of workers and the rig’s load. Use of hand signals is the main form of communication when the load is being moved. Rigging communication can be conducted in various forms including: Verbal signals Radio signals Hand signals
4
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME): Hand Signals Hand signals that are used have been standardized to avoid any confusion that could create a dangerous situation Hand signals provide clear instructions from the person signaling to the crane operators and any others who could be affected by the rig’s operations To ensure workers’ safety it is important to know the basic signals of communication
5
Rigging Communication Signals Hoist: To move the load up Lower: To move the load down Use Main Hoist: To use the main hoist of the crane
6
Rigging Communication Signals Whip line: A crane with two hoists Boom: Second axel on a crane
7
Rigging Communication Signals The boom and the load are two separate sections. Therefore you can signal conduct two separate movements at once
