1 Note-taking Skills West Bladen High School

2 Why do we have to take notes? u To help you identify the main, important ideas in the lecture u To help you learn and remember the material for later u To have a record of information that may not be available anywhere else

3 Why do we have to take notes? u To keep track of information your teacher (the same person who makes your exams) considers important u To help you complete class assignments and homework u To clarify for you the purpose of the lecture

4 Taking Notes in Class u It is important to know what to do… l before the lecture l during the lecture l after the lecture

5 Before the Lecture... u Check the “Schedule for the Day” for the topics to be introduced u Review any notes from the previous lecture u Complete any assigned outside reading or reference assignments

6 Before the Lecture... u Have notes/paper and writing utensils ready u Sit where you will be able to avoid distractions u Be prepared to listen and actively participate

7 During the Lecture... u Listen attentively u Write down the main ideas, context, and information u Jot down examples that support the main ideas u Summarize what is said in your own words

8 During the Lecture... u Use abbreviations and short- hands as often as possible u Ask questions! u Answer questions! u Listen for what is emphasized or repeated

9 During the Lecture... u Make sure to copy down anything the teacher writes on the overhead or board u Write in an organized, orderly, and concise manner

10 After the Lecture... u REVIEW your notes, in order to keep your memory fresh! u Underline or highlight main ideas, concepts, and information

11 After the Lecture... u Seek answers to any remaining questions u Converse with your peers about new material

12 Remember! u Be PREPARED! u Do NOT try to write down everything! u Participate constructively!

13 Remember! u It is better to take too many notes than too few! u Taking time to review after each class will save you hours of time later!

17 EFFECTIVE STUDY u I. The key to effective study is: CONSISTENCY u II. Consistency is dependent upon planning: l Keep a weekly calendar l Set a study time you can adhere to daily l Plan to work in the same place each evening

18 EFFECTIVE STUDY l Work at a desk or table l Have good lighting l NO TV, Radio, Stereo, etc l Do something each evening u III. Study Plan l P = Preview; read the bold print, pictures, graphs, etc.

19 EFFECTIVE STUDY l Q = Question; read chapter questions, vocabulary, and teacher worksheets two or three times l R = Read; read the given selections, and note familiar passages l S = Study; go over chapter questions and worksheets. Review class notes l T = Test yourself; don’t wait for a formal test to discover you don’t know an answer

20 EFFECTIVE STUDY u Keep a Notebook for every class: l Keep them neat l Update your notebook daily l Place corrected papers and/or handouts in your notebook (in the back)
