2 Background Knowledge Mickey Mantle was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma on October 20, 1931. He died in Dallas, Texas on August 13, 1995. His parents were Elvin and Lovell Mantle. Mickey Mantle married Merlyn Johnson and had four sons together. He attended Commerce High School as a teenager, and he later went to the University of Oklahoma.

3 Why Mickey was Famous Mickey Mantle played in the major-leagues for the New York Yankees for 18 years. He played in 16 All- Star games. He played on 7 World Series Championship clubs and on 12 pennant winners. Mickey also won 3 American League MVP titles in 1956, 1957, and 1962. Mickey Mantle was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.
