2 Barrel strip type I Prototype Service Modules - Overview The RAL type I Service Module (SM) supplies up to 8 Staves with the following services: Electrical Power (per Stave side) –LV power to the Hybrids (15 – 20V DC @ 7A max + sense). TBC – old estimates. –LV power to the EoS PCB (15 – 20V DC @ 3A max + sense). TBC – old estimates. –HV power (600V DC max - load unknown, probably few mA). TBC. Interlock –Interlocks 2 x NTC sensors monitoring coolant pipe temperature. Optical Fibres –Data & Control arranged into 2 x Data and 2 x Control, 8 way ribbons within the SM tray. Data Stave side 1. Data Stave side 2. Control Stave side 1. Control Stave side 2. ( Final arrangement TBC ). Cooling –Flow & Return Manifolds within the SM. 19 th January 2015 ATLAS Upgrade Activities, Oxford 2

5 EoS PCB assembly The EoS PCB is a Flex-Rigid assembly which is made up of a pair of rigid PCB’s (one mounted each side of the Stave) and a Flex-pcb ‘Pigtail’ section onto which is mounted the Stave electrical connector. Function of EoS includes: Distribution of the LV & HV power to the Stave (via the Stave connector). Connects the Interlock lines for each Stave (via the Stave connector). –The Interlock NTC sensors are to be mounted onto a separate flex-pcb built into the Stave at assembly time, and attached to the return loop of the cooling pipe. LC optical connectors mounted on each Rigid section carry Data and control signals to/from each Stave side. 19 th January 2015 ATLAS Upgrade Activities, Oxford 5

6 Current Status Service Modules: We currently have 2 prototype mechanical Service Modules finished, and 2 fully functional electrical SMs in production (which should be finished early February – delay due to suppliers, supplier problems). Extra electrical test harnesses will be ordered shortly to enable: Full powering of Staves during bench tests (Stave connector test leads). Full powering of Staves via an electrical SM (PP1 connector test lead). Data fibre harnesses have been delivered (these are fully functional). EoS tasks: Build ‘test’ prototype Flex-Rigid assembly. –To be used for testing of ‘pigtail flexibility and reliability. –Testing of NTC sensors during Stave assembly. –EoS component power dissipation tests. –Continue to work with our colleagues in DESY. Other ongoing work includes Radiation testing of components (ARACON, cable ties etc), and liaising with our colleagues from the End Cap and Pixel communities. 19 th January 2015 ATLAS Upgrade Activities, Oxford 6
