2 Overviews and Depth Studies Overviews can be used as an introduction to the historical period or integrated with the depth studies (10% of teaching time ) Depth Studies The content is designed to allow detailed studies of specific aspects of each historical period, including societies, events, movements or developments. For each historical period there are three depth studies. For each depth study there are up to four topics.

3 Key inquiry questions There are 4 key inquiry questions for each time period in the syllabus. The key inquiry questions are addressed over the depth studies for the time period. The overview can support the key inquiry questions. All of the key inquiry questions need to be addressed by the end of the time period study.

4 Exploring the syllabus chronology The Ancient World (approx. 60,000 BC – c. AD 650) The Ancient to the Modern World (c. AD 650 – c. 1750) The Making of the Modern World (1750 – 1945) The Modern World and Australia (1945 - present)

5 Stage 4: The Ancient World Overview Depth Study 1 Investigating The Ancient Past Including ancient Australia Depth Study 2 The Mediterranean World Egypt or Greece or Rome Depth Study 3 The Asian World India or China

6 Stage 4: The Ancient to the Modern World Overview Depth Study 4 The Western and Islamic World Vikings or Medieval Europe or The Ottoman Empire or Renaissance Italy Depth Study 5 The Asia-Pacific World Angkor/Khmer Empire or Japan and the Shoguns or Polynesian Expansion Depth Study 6 Expanding Contacts Mongol Expansion or The Black Death in Asia, Europe and Africa or Spanish Conquest of the Americas or Aboriginal and Indigenous Peoples, Colonisation and Contact History

7 Stage 5: The Making of the Modern World Overview Depth Study 1 Making a Better World? Industrial Revolution or Movement of Peoples or Progressive Ideas and Movements Depth Study 2 Australia and Asia Making a Nation or Asia and the World Core Study - Depth Study 3 Australians at War (World Wars I and II) Mandatory Study

8 Stage 5: The Modern World and Australia Overview Core Study – Depth Study 4 Rights and Freedoms (1945 to the Present) Mandatory Study Depth Study 5 The Globalising World Popular Culture or The Environment Movement or Migration Experiences Depth Study 6 School-developed topic drawn from either of the overviews

9 Depth Study 6 School-developed topic drawn from either of the Stage 5 overviews Possibilities include: The Vietnam Era The Holocaust UN Peacekeepers Terrorism Genocide Gulf War – Iraq War European Union Internet Arab Spring China Threat of Nuclear War

10 Elective history The current provision for an additional elective study of History will remain. Students may undertake 100 or 200 hours in Stage 4 and/or Stage 5. The elective course is in the current History Years 7-10 syllabus (2003). The topics chosen from Elective History must not overlap significantly with any topics selected from the new Years 7-10 History syllabus.

11 Opportunities The syllabus has a clear chronology and choices that allows flexibility for: topic selection to support community interests topic choices to engage students in historical inquiry in-depth historical inquiry the development of an optional school-developed topic in Stage 5 links to Stage 6 Modern History and Ancient History courses.
