Area of Composite Figures
Objective: Find the area of composite figures.

A composite figure is made up of triangles, quadrilaterals, semicircles (half of a circle), and other 2-dimensional figures. To find the area of a composite figure, you must separate it into figures with areas you know how to find, and then ADD those areas. To find the area of composite figures, lets review the formulas of the other shapes: Area of a Rectangle: Area = Length × Width Area of a Triangle: Area = Base × Height 2 Area of a Trapezoid: Area = (base 1 + base 2) × height

Example 1: This figure can be separated into a rectangle and a semicircle. Find the area of each. Rectangle: A= L × W A= 10 × 14 A= 140mm2 Semicircle: A= π × r2 2 A = 3.14 × 72 A = 3.14 × 49 A = mm2 = 76.93 Area = = mm2

Example 2: 1. Rectangle: A = L × W A = 10 × 6 A = 60 in2 2. Triangle: A = b × h 2 A= 4 × 6 = 24 = 12in Semicircle: A= π × r2 A = 3.14 × 32 ÷ 2 A = 3.14 × 9 ÷ 2 A = ÷ 2 A = in 2 Area = = in2 How many figures do you see? ______________________
