Size Relationships in Art

Scale: How one subject relates in size to a DIFFERENT subject in an artwork 2a is smaller than 2b on the page

Our brains compare the items in a picture to each other to decide what “size” they are supposed to be. Majority rules on scale. Since everything but the egg is the “right” size our brain decides that the egg, which is normally tiny, must be super huge.

When only a few items exist the most common ones win…so in this picture we have a normal sized hand and donut with a tiny robot

Proportion: How parts of a subject relate in size to other parts of THE SAME subject Sometimes artists will exaggerate proportions for effect. As a beginner we want to work on keeping proportions accurate.

Proportion: How parts of a subject relate in size to other parts of THE SAME subject The bottom of the gem is equal to one and a half top parts of the gem. When we start drawing we can decide about how big that part is using scaling

This gem is divided into three parts. The side “frame” is equal to one half of the front

As we draw we observe very carefully and look for other relationships in our subject that help us draw more accurately All the corners of the diamonds line up in a straight line horizontally The diamonds on the side are the same size as the one in the middle, but the points are slanted diagonally from top to bottom and intersect with the second row… The bottom edge of the diamond is as long as 1/3 of the middle diamond There are four triangles across the top and three diamonds There are five rows on the bottom of the gem that are equally high…the middle line is straight, but the others are not. The diamond is symmetrical and all the horizontal lines are parallel.
