3 Objective of Spivey Sentences Today’s lesson will help us to become better writers. Learning how to make descriptive, sensory word choices, using varied sentence types, and choosing more mature paragraph structures, will make us write like real authors. Using the Noun + part sentence allows us to expand our sentence to include more description. This lets our readers form a picture in their minds of what we are writing about.

4 Objectives and Assessments TSW review types of Spivey sentences TSW write a sentence using Noun + part TSW write a sentence using Part + Noun TSW write a paragraph using four types of Spivey sentences in the correct format. Assessment TSW show mastery of Noun + Part by writing a paragraph correctly incorporating a Noun + part sentence.

5 Let’s Review! Main Sentence Trunk (MST) Article Noun Verb The horse runs.

6 You Write One!

7 Surround the Noun Use a descriptive word BEFORE the noun then “with” and last, a descriptive word after the noun. The exquisite chocolate brown horse runs with long fluid strides.

8 You Write One! Now, Share with your shoulder partner your MST and your Surround the Noun Sentences. WHISPER!

9 Three-Action MST + three verbs. Make sure to put commas after each verb in a list or series. The exquisite chocolate brown horse runs, leaps into the air, and jumps over the fence with long fluid strides.

10 You Write One! Now, Listen to your shoulder partner’s Three-Action sentence and write it down if it is correct. If the sentence is not correct help your partner fix it. WHISPER!

13 Read the Sentence. Identify the trigger words used to expand the sentence. Write down which expander type is highlighted.

36 Here’s what your paragraph should sound like… Red and green, yellow and black, spotted and striped, the gentle graceful seahorse has an interesting method of attracting his mate. The male seahorse glides side to side, up and down, his body (noun + Part) turning every color of the rainbow wordlessly impressing the woman he loves with his elegant dance (surround the noun). Expanding, opening, and flashing his pouch (three action); he shows her the safe, comfortable cradle her children will grow in. Up and down they go in a waltz their tails hook and noses touch (noun + part). Romance is not flowers and candy, but swimming side by side using color and motion prompting the female, his companion (re-namer) to give her precious eggs to him. He will hold her tiny babies until they are ready to see the world on their own.
