Warm-up #1 On a piece of paper, write your first and last name, today’s date, and answer the following question in a complete sentence: Discuss your definition with someone next to you What is a polynomial?

Announcements: Quiz P4/P5 on 7/25!!! Daily Question: What are polynomials and how do we add, subtract, and multiply them? Section P4:Polynomials Standard Form Degree of Polynomials Adding and Subtracting Polynomials Multiplying Polynomials

P4:Simplifying Polynomial Expressions Polynomials– A polynomial is single term or the sum of two or more terms containing variables in the numerator with whole number exponents. A polynomial is an expression of the form: The degree of the polynomial is determined by the highest exponent of any one term of the polynomial in standard form. This is a 5 th degree polynomial. This polynomial has 3 terms, so it is called a trinomial! Also known as Standard Form of a Polynomial

What happens if there are two different variables in the polynomial? You must add the two variable exponents together! 3x 2 y 3 - 4xy 2 + 7y Add 2 + 3 = 5, the degree of this polynomial is 5.

Polynomial or NOT? A polynomial can only have whole # exponents, no negative or rational exponents! It can only have addition and subtraction of terms: no division. Examples: Non-Examples:

Add, Subtract, or Multiply Ex 1: Answer: Ex 2: Ex 3:(7x+4)(8x-9)

YOU TRY: Answers: b: a: (3x 2 - 4x) – (-6x 2 - 5x + 3) c: (3x 2 - 4x) (-6x 2 - 5x + 3) (3x 2 - 4x) +(-6x 2 - 5x + 3) a.9x 2 + x – 3 b. -3x 2 –9x+3 c. -18x 4 +9x 3 +29x 2 -12x

Classwork: Turn in when finished!!! Let’s see what your remember about cubes. Find the product on problem #56: Now find the product on #68: With a partner, you are responsible for completing the following problems. #6, 14, 16, 24, 42, 51, 64, and 70

Summary: Think-Pair-Share: What are two things to remember when adding, subtracting, or multiplying polynomials? Take a moment to think about it, discuss it with your partner, and be prepared to share with the rest of the class.
