2 Job lead Information about a job that is available –Networking – talking to people you know or meet about available jobs –School-to-work programs – through high school and businesses where students get opportunities to work for different companies –Print job advertisement – newspaper job classifieds or billboards or business signs

3 Job Leads (continued) Phone call – call business to see if they are hiring or if you can fill out an application Employment agencies – –Career Center - don’t have to pay for job assistance –Job Shop – may have to pay a fee or company may pay Internet – various sites to go to for job openings

4 Job application A form that asks questions about a job applicant’s skills, work experience, education, and interests When completing any applications/paperwork for a job you should use Standard English. A personal fact sheet has information about yourself that you will need to complete a job application

5 Filling out an application for a job Read all directions carefully Be neat Use Standard English Answer all questions – put N/A if something does not apply Use blue or black ink Put most current job 1 st – reverse chronological order

6 Job application Write a specific job title For salary put “Open” or “Negotiable” Sign name and date with current date

7 Illegal questions Employers do not have the right to ask you about the following: –Your disability status –Your race –Your national origin –Your religion –Your Gender They can ask if you have been convicted of a felony

8 References – people who will recommend you for a job Do use: teachers, guidance counselors, principals, pastors, parent’s long-time friends, coaches coaches Do not use: personal friends and family

9 Letter of recommendation You may need to ask someone to do for you for the following: –Applying for a job –Scholarship –College admission

23 Interviewing You never get a second chance to make a first impression!!! Dress for an interview –One step above the job you are applying for –Neat appearance –Well groomed nails and hair

24 What should you know before you go to an interview? Information about the company Date and time of interview and interviewer’s name Be able to answer questions about your resume

25 How early should you arrive for an interview? Arrive 10-15 minutes early

26 What to take and do? Bring a pen and two copies of your resume. Take no one with you to the interview. At the interview: Give a firm handshake. Remain standing till asked to sit down. Lean forward during the interview to show interest. Don’t chew gum during the interview or place things on their desk. Look the interviewer in the eyes.

27 What to say? Speak clearly. Always be honest and positive. Employers are looking for employees with a good attitude. When asked questions: What type of work would you like to do? Be specific. What salary do you expect? Open or negotiable. Wait until near the end of the interview to ask about the pay.

28 Good question to ask the interviewer? What type of clothing will I wear? What hours would I be working? What will be my main job responsibilities? Ask specific questions about the business ????????????????????????????????

29 End of the interview At the end of the interview you should smile, shake their hand, and thank them for the interview. It is alright to telephone the interviewer 3-5 days after the interview

30 Thank you letter Should be brief, and to the point, neat Send it 1-2 days after the interview In note should thank the interviewer for taking the time to interview you. Give a brief explanation of how your skills and qualifications would be good for their company

31 Job Notice When leaving a job, you should give a two-weeks written notice. Reasons for doing this? –So there is a record of the notice –It is proper business procedure –So that you can get your vacation time/sick time allowances –So they will give you a good reference
