2 Good Night’s Sleep  Try to get adequate sleep each night before school, especially before a major test.  The average teenager needs eight to ten hours of sleep per night.  If you don’t get enough sleep, you will have a hard time paying attentionduring class.

3 Eat a Healthy Breakfast  Protein: Foods high in protein help you to concentrate: Some of the best sources are:  Nuts—Almonds, Walnuts, Cashews, Peanuts  Eggs  Cottage cheese  Cheese  Yogurt  Milk  Peanut Butter

4 Eat a Healthy Breakfast  Complex Carbohydrates aid in optimal brain function.  Whole grain foods deliver a steady stream of energy because they take longer to digest.  Complex carbs, paired with protein, offer optimal mental performance. Good food sources include:  Oatmeal  Oat bran cereal  Whole-grain bread/bagel  Whole-grain cereal  Brown rice

5 Eat a Healthy Breakfast  Cantaloupes  Watermelon  Tomatoes  Plums  Pineapples  Oranges  Avocado  Apples  Grapes  Kiwi  Peaches  Cherries  Strawberries  Blueberries Fruits help with blood flow to the brain, as well as recall and memory. Some of the best fruits include:

6 Avoid junk food  Eating a healthy breakfast has been shown to increase students’ test scores.  A good breakfast does not mean a can of sugary soda and a Twinkie.  Avoid consuming large amounts of sugar or caffeine before a test.  Sugar and caffeine will make you jittery, and half way through the test, you may fall asleep.

7 Sample Tests and Information  Sample test questions, review information, study guides and helpful links can be found on the LHS website: Legacyhslonghorns.com  Simply click on the “Info” tab the “Proficiency” for further information on Nevada Proficiency Exams.  Attend after school tutoring

8 During the test…  Read ALL directions!!  Focus on the test, don’t be distracted  Re-read confusing directions or passages  Don’t make dumb mistakes (mark wrong answer, illegible, didn’t think)  Mark notes on the test, if allowed

9 Testing Tips and Strategies Multiple Choice Questions  Make sure you understand the question  Eliminate answers that you know are incorrect  If two are exactly the same, it is usually neither  Double check answers, but don’t over think them  Don’t get stuck, keep going and return to tougher questions  Overly obvious choices are probably wrong  Try to answer the question before reading the answer options  Read all choices before answering

10 Testing Tips and Strategies Questions from a Text, Chart or Graph  Read questions before reading the text, try to find answer, look at options, read all the text before answering  Underline important things as you read  Try to answer questions before looking at the options  The answer is in the text, chart or graph

11 What to bring for testing  Multiple pencils  A book to read (if you finish early)  A bottle of water  A positive attitude

12 What NOT to bring to the test  All nuisance items must be OFF and AWAY. Your test is invalidated if you have anything out for any reason. You will also face disciplinary actions.  Do not bring notes to the test. You can not use them or have them out.  You will be provided a calculator if you are allowed to use one. Don’t bring your own.  Food is not allowed.
