General Info The Parthenon was built twice. There was the Pre-Parthenon and the Parthenon, both built long ago. The Parthenon was probably named for the majestic Athena Parthenos in the temple. The Parthenon being in the Acropolis, Athens thinks of Athena(Greek wisdom and war goddess) as their patron.

Pre, New, Historic  The Pre-Parthenon was destroyed 480 BC by the Persians, who burnt down the Acropolis and everything around it.  The new Parthenon was built in 447 BC, and it took about eight years to build. They rebuilt the Parthenon to show the Persians that Athenians have power.  The Parthenon was sculpted with ivory and gold by the prominent Phidias, and the architects were Iktinos and Kallikrates.

Why Athena? According to myth, Poseidon also wanted Athens, known as Aticca at the time. The fought for it-whoever made a better present would become the patron. Poseidon made a saltwater spring, but they couldn’t drink the water, so They chose Athena, who made the first olive tree. Athena changed the name to Athens later. Their symbol is the wise owl on an olive branch.

The Pre-Parthenon The Parthenon has been shook by giant earthquakes, set on fire by the Persians, even shattered by exploding gunpowder, and looted for the cool sculptures. The Athenians made it to perfection again in just 9 years.

Parthenon When the Persians burned the Acropolis, Athens were mad, but the decided to build it again to show Athenian power. They did not fail to please. Soon, after the nine years, the Parthenon was built, more resounding than ever.

A Question I have taught you a lot about the Parthenon. How do you think people would make a temple this amazing without the simplest tools that we have now? What kind of tools would you think theses architects used?
