1 Comfort High School Dual Credit Program Overview

2 Dual Credit courses are classes taught online through a college or university. Students receive high school AND college credit after successfully completing the course or courses. Students in the program are considered college students; are protected by FERPA laws In Dual Credit Classes, college credit is earned upon completion of the class with a grade of “C” or higher Dual Credit grades do become part of the student’s high school & college academic record regardless of grade Dual Credit courses generally transfer to most Texas Public Universities It is the student’s responsibility to confirm with the school they want to attend if credits will transfer What is Dual Credit?

3 Saves money o Students can earn up to 6 hours each semester for little to no cost. o Reduces the costs of tuition and textbooks resulting in thousands of dollars in savings o UTSA - 3 credit hour course costs $545.00 (estimated) o Northwest Vista costs 1-6 credits are at a flat rate of $336.00 for In-District Tuition (Bexar County) and $1,008.00 for Out-of- District Tuition per semester Gets some prerequisites out of the way Potential Advantages of Dual Credit

4 AP Course Comfort High School offers AP courses in the following areas: – Science: AP Biology & AP Chem (alternating years) – Math: AP Calculus AB (Independent Study in Calculus) – AP US History – AP English 3

5 In an AP (Advance Placement) Class, college credit is not earned until a student takes and achieves a certain score on an AP test. Acceptable scores vary by college. Student must apply to have AP Test scores reviewed by University. Not automatic Dual credit courses are college courses that result in college credits. Dual Credit students may opt to take the AP test and potentially earn AP credit if they so desire. Difference between AP & Dual Credit

6 The Dual Credit program is designed for select high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors seeking to get a jump on their college coursework. Students who have test scores that indicate they are ready to enter the program and who feel comfortable doing college level work should consider dual credit. Students are allowed to take a maximum of TWO Dual Credit courses per semester. Palo Alto offers courses for free UTPB, UT Arlington, Lamar, and UT Austin offer dual credit courses for a fee. Who Should Take Dual Credit?

7 These are college courses!!!! Comfort ISD provides the classroom and facilitator for students to work on coursework during the school day. Comfort teachers DO NOT teach the course. Courses are all online, no direct teach. Students are responsible for submitting work and correspondence with professor and college. Parents cannot contact the college due to FERPA.

8 Dual Credit Courses offered at CHS Sophomore Courses: US History Junior Courses: English 3 (English Composition 1301 in the fall & English Composition 1302 in spring) US History (History 1301 & History 1302) Senior Courses: English 4 (British Literature 2322 & British Literature II 2323) Government Economics

10 Dual Credit options 1.Palo Alto College- 2 free classes per semester 2.UT Permian Basin- $150-200 per course 3.UT Arlington- $150 per course 4.Lamar- $400 per course

11 How Eligibility is Determined? Eligibility is determined by the enrolling College or University based on two factors: 1. A completed Application submitted by the posted deadline 2. Qualifying Test Scores submitted to the College Assessment Office through the appropriate vendor by the posted deadline ·Reminder: ·SAT scores must be provided by College Board ·ACT scores provided by ACT ·PSAT/PLAN scores provided by the high school report 11

12 Application Requirements Varies depending upon institution providing dual credit courses. ·Palo Alto- Online application by March 11, 2016. ·UT Permian Basin- UTPB Dual Credit paper application submitted to Mrs. Brummett by August 2016. ·UT Arlington & Lamar University- Online application through www.applytexas.org. See college website for specific instructions.www.applytexas.org All require same qualifying scores for admissions. 12

13 QUALIFYING SCORES SAT – 1070 Composite (Critical Reading + Math) with at least a 500 on each section ACT – 23 Composite (Critical Reading + Math) with at least a 19 on each section Student must send SAT/ACT scores directly to college TSI Test Scores (Placement Exam) – English – 363-390 with essay score of 4 or 5 – Reading – 351-390 – Essay – 4 – Math – 350-380 (for Economics) PSAT for sophomores entering dual credit during Jr. year Combined score of 107+ with a verbal and math score of 50+

14 Payment for Courses Students who take courses through an institution that charges for dual credit courses must pay the institution directly. At this time the school district DOES NOT pay for dual credit courses at any school. Be aware of payment deadlines. Student may be dropped from class for non-payment of tuition.

15 Dual Credit Students must maintain an overall GPA of a 2.0 (C) in the dual credit course and remain in good standing at their high school. Dual Credit Students who earn below a 2.0 (C) in a single semester (fall or spring) will not be allowed to continue in the dual credit program. Requirements for ALL Dual Credit Students

16 Communication with Parents, Students ·Parent Communication: ·Parents may contact the high school facilitator regarding concerns or questions about their student’s dual credit courses. Due to FERPA laws the colleges will only communicate with the student, facilitator, or counselor. ·Student Communication: ·Important emails will be sent to students through their email and dual credit course website. ·Students may email or call their College Dual Credit Professor or Liaison seeking guidance with the program. 16
