UCLA Transfer Admission for International Students: Requirements, Guidelines, Myths

Minimum transfer requirements  60 semester/90 quarter transferable units  2 transferable English composition courses  1 transferable Math course  4 courses chosen from 2 of the following areas: Arts & Humanities; Social & Behavioral Sciences; Physical & Biological Sciences

Selection requirements  Academic criteria  Completion of eligibility requirements by spring prior to transfer  Progress toward completion of major preparation requirements by spring prior to transfer  Competitive grade point average (GPA) for the major selected  Completion of IGETC or UCLA general education requirements strongly encouraged  Personal criteria  Employment while attending school  Family responsibility  Returning to school/significant improvement over time

Tips for International Students  Complete English requirements as early as possible  No credit for courses in language that was primary language of instruction in high school  Don’t “repeat” course work in which you had previously earned C or better grades  Don’t enroll in lower-level courses if you have already completed higher-level elsewhere  Have course descriptions available for appropriate CCC course placement  Consider less-impacted majors

International Applicants – Filling out the application  Provide complete academic history beginning with 9 th grade  Report all course work attempted from every institution attended both within and outside the U.S.  Report credits/hours and grades exactly as they would appear on an official transcript  Do not work from memory; misreporting grades and omitting course work is considered an academic integrity issue  Report any/all diplomas or degrees earned from any country

Filling out the application - continued  Provide thorough explanation for all gaps in education  Include beginning and ending dates (month/year) for each explanation  Report A-level results (GCE A-level, Singapore A-level, HKALE) in the Additional Comments section  Report language of instruction for 9-12 th grade  Respond to personal statement prompts in your own words

How does UCLA evaluate foreign course work?  Uses course descriptions (be prepared to submit course descriptions if asked)  Applies same guidelines used for domestic course work  Uses standard (commonly-accepted) grade and credit conversions  All evaluations are done in-house

True or False: common myths & misconceptions  It’s OK to disregard previous course work and “start over”: FALSE  D or F grades from another country may be repeated at the community college: TRUE  You must have both English courses completed before you can apply: FALSE***  IGETC is not required for admission: TRUE

Common myths & misconceptions - continued  SAT scores are neither required nor considered for transfer students: TRUE  Transfer students must have extensive participation in extracurricular activities: FALSE  UCLA accepts evaluations done by outside credentials evaluation agencies: FALSE

Application timeline  One application for all UC campuses!  Transfer applicants can apply for the fall quarter only  Applications must be submitted between November 1 st and November 30 th  Applicants must apply online at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply  The UC application fee is $80.00** per campus  We recommend that students apply broadly within the UC System

Budget, Visas, etc.  Estimated budget for 2013-2014: $55,293/year, including tuition, room & board, books, etc.  Financial resources are NOT part of admission decision  Do not submit financial documents at the time of application  Instructions for obtaining an I-20 will be provided after you submit an SIR  The Dashew Center for International Students & Scholars: a great resource for international students
