2. LOCATION Positioned between the eastern coastline of Italy and countries of the Balkan Peninsula, from Slovenia, south through Croatia, Montenegro, and on to Albania. The southern boundary of the sea ends in the Strait of Otranto between Albania and Italy's Salento Peninsula. Immediately south of that strait the Ionian Sea begins.

4. The Uskoks were one of the most dangerous band of pirates who terrorized the Adriatic Sea in the 16 th and 17 th centuries. INVADERS Pirates of the Adriatic Sea preferred Venetian Ships.

5. POPULATION The Adriatic's shores are populated by more than 3.5 million people. The largest cities are Bari, Venice, Trieste and Split.

6. EARLY SETTLEMENTS & CONTROL The earliest settlements of the Adriatic shores were the Etruscan, Illyrian, and Greek. By the 2 nd century BC, the shores were under the Roman Republic’s control. In the Middle Ages, the Adriatic Shores and the sea itself were controlled most notably by the Byzantine Empire, the Republic of Venice, the Habsburg Monarchy, and the Ottoman Empire.

7. DEPTH Ranges from 0-20 feet near the shorelines and goes up to over 1200 feet towards the center especially in the southern region.
